Install 5 Claude Code Plugins to Stretch Your Usage Limits

Add model fallback, memory, token savings, a repo scan and skill learning to Claude Code, one plugin at a time.

Overview

By the end of this guide, you'll have five add-ons running in Claude Code. Each one fixes a different reason your usage runs out or your sessions feel like starting over:

  • A gateway that switches to another model when your limit hits (OmniRoute).

  • A memory plugin so each session remembers the last one (claude-mem).

  • A compression layer that sends fewer tokens (Headroom).

  • A repo scan that names the automations you are missing (Claude Code Setup).

  • A skill that watches your corrections and proposes updates to your other skills (Task Observer).

Who This Is For

  • You use Claude Code and keep hitting your usage limit.

  • You re-explain your project at the start of every session.

  • You want to cut token use without changing how you work.

  • You are comfortable running a few terminal commands.

  • You want to try free or lower-cost options before paying for more.

What You'll Need

  • Claude Code installed and working.

  • Node.js 20 or higher (for claude-mem and Task Observer).

  • Python 3.10 or higher (for Headroom).

  • A project folder to test in. Use one with nothing sensitive first.

  • Accounts or API keys for the AI providers you want OmniRoute to use. You bring your own. OmniRoute does not supply them.

  • Time to install and test one plugin at a time.

The Core Idea

Usage limits run out for three reasons: you ask for too much, you repeat yourself, and your tools send more than they need.

Each plugin targets one of those. Install them one at a time, so you know what each one changes. And treat every plugin like software from a stranger: read what it does before you install it.

Quick Terms

  • Plugin: an add-on you install into Claude Code.

  • Skill: a saved set of instructions Claude can follow when it is needed.

  • Hook: an action that runs by itself when something happens, such as after a file is saved.

  • Subagent: a helper Claude starts for one focused job.

  • MCP server: a connector that lets Claude use an outside tool or service.

  • API key: a private code that lets a tool use a service on your account. Treat it like a password.

  • Repo: short for repository, a project folder tracked with Git.

Going Further

  • Keep a simple log for a week: the date, when you hit a limit, and which plugins were on. Remove any plugin you do not notice helping.

  • Go deeper on cutting token use - Guide: Cut Claude Code Token Usage by Up to 95% With Headroom, a Free Open-Source Context Compressor (AI Foundations)

  • Build a notebook that holds long-term project knowledge outside Claude Code - Guide: Give Claude Infinite Memory With NotebookLM (AI Foundations)

  • Re-read each plugin's README once a month for changes to install steps, pricing or data handling.

  • Add only reviewed material to your memory tools. They remember what you give them.
