Lemon Squeezy acts as the "merchant of record" for digital products and SaaS subscriptions, meaning it legally sells on your behalf, so it, not you, is responsible for calculating and remitting sales tax and VAT across every country and state you sell into.
You set up your product, pricing, and checkout page on their platform, and customers pay through a Lemon Squeezy-hosted checkout. It handles subscription billing, license keys, and payouts. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024, and the underlying technology is being folded into a new Stripe product, though Lemon Squeezy continues operating under the same team and branding for now.
