PostHog is an all-in-one, developer-oriented analytics platform bundling product analytics, session replay, feature flags, and A/B testing with a genuinely usable free tier, best suited to product-led SaaS teams comfortable with a more technical setup than Google Analytics.
A closer look at PostHog's bundled analytics tools
PostHog combines several tools that are often bought separately elsewhere: event-based product analytics, session replay/heatmaps, feature flagging, A/B testing/experiments, and surveys, all under one SDK and one free-tier usage allowance. It offers both a hosted cloud version and a self-hostable open-source version for teams that want to keep data in-house.
It's primarily adopted by engineering-led product teams and startups who want to avoid stitching together Amplitude, Hotjar, LaunchDarkly, and Optimizely separately, and who are comfortable installing an SDK and reading usage-based pricing docs rather than working through a sales rep. It's become a common recommendation in startup and indie-hacker communities specifically because of its free-tier generosity relative to Amplitude or Mixpanel.
Its tradeoff is that it's built analytics-first and developer-first: the interface assumes comfort with events, properties, and SQL-like querying (HogQL) more than a typical marketer expects, and marketing-specific workflows (like a visual no-code A/B test builder for a marketing page) are less polished than dedicated CRO tools like VWO or AB Tasty.
